Well, I probably shouldn't promote my former employer, since they
"eliminated" my position and sent me off to join the ranks of the
unemlpoyed ... but the web site - http://www.winebow.com - has a lot of
information on Italian wines. (it would have had a lot of information on
non-Italian wines, but they dumped me before I could finish working with
that department to get their wines into the database)

Anyway, Falesco Vitiano is one of their most asked about wines -
http://www.winebow.com/wine_basicinfo.asp?ID=150&producer=22 - and one that
I like as well. I tend to like fruity (not sweet), full-bodied reds.

I can also recommend ...
Argiolas "Costera" -
http://www.winebow.com/wine_basicinfo.asp?ID=160&producer=3
Argiolas "Perdera" -
http://www.winebow.com/wine_basicinfo.asp?ID=161&producer=3
Prunotto "Barbera d'Asti D.O.C. FIULOT" -
http://www.winebow.com/wine_basicinfo.asp?ID=50&producer=51
Prunotto "Dolcetto d'Alba D.O.C.

These are all Italian and though they are around $10 a bottle (US), they
are not your stereotypical Italian straw-wrapped bottle wines.

Other non-Italian wines that I like are ...
Elsa Malbec (Argentina)
Gascon Malbec (Argentina)
McGuigan Shiraz (Australia)
Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon (Chile)

I also like California Zinfandels (not to be confused with white
zinfandel). This is the only American Terroir (the over all environment
within which a given varietal grows.) Merlots and Pinot Noirs are also
good, I think Pinot Noir is a developed taste. I am also partial to Cote
du Rhone and Cote du Languedoc - if you're not against French wines <g>.
