How come politics is rarely discussed amongst this group of curious  
minds?

A guess off the top of my head: we're all doing relatively excellent  
and aren't particularly interested in openly discussing horrible  
things. Just like TV news watchers would rather hear about  
celebrities and the immoral acts from the bottom rung of our cultures  
than the horrendous gap in quality of life between those with and  
without televisions.
