[thechat] DVD-ROM drive unhappiness

on my four year old Dell Precision 360 the Samsung DVD-ROM drive stopped playing DVDs at some time over the past couple years; no idea when.

It worked fine when I got the machine. It still plays CDs just fine; music, software install, AoE, no problem. Just doesn't recognize any DVD of any kind.

Reinstalled the driver, the decoder and DVD software (PowerDVD) that came with the machine; nothing changes.

I've been away from the hardware side of things so long that I'm not sure what the best next step.

Ideas?
