sadly, it's 180 pages with significant amounts of heading, subheading,
sub-subheading, bold, italicised, and otherwise formatted font.

it is indeed probably a corrupted file. I've realized I can put all the
pre-content info in a separate file, and avoid the nonsense that's going
on, then combine the PDFs after the fact.

and I'll experiment with the copy/paste as text, just to see if that's
the problem.
