i'd have to ask to be sure, but i believe he's friends with one of the vice presidents.  don't quote me on that though.

with an organization as large as interland who has been in business as long as they have, some people are bound to run into some problems.  if they were all bad they wouldn't have the kind of large clients that they provide services for (list available upon request).

like i said, he's not a lowly reseller so he gets a different level of service than most of their customers.  being a service oriented person himself (and good-hearted), you're bound to reap the benefits of being associated with him, even if it's only hosting.
