how about strongly encouraged to make them unnecessary? http redirects
going away in six months would be nearly as troublesome for me as losing my
meo email address in six months. unlike many meo users, my frontdoor is
(and has been since i've had an account) my resume. it's the only version
i've had online for a long time. more importantly, there are tons of links
out there in thelist archive and many other places that link to my code
section. eliminating even redirects will kill all those links. i dislike
that alot, not because i lose out on eyeballs, but because it's a disservice
to the community.

this goes back to my idea of archiving articles past a certain date and
below a certain rating. it also makes tracking hits on articles important
as well. once an article reaches its "expiration date" it goes up for
archiving. criteria like average rating and number of visits could keep it
out of the archive. however, if archived, it's posted in a very obvious way
that the article may or may not have html that validates with the existing
design and/or doctype and may not display properly.

possibly though i think it would have potential for causing more harm than
good.
