Yes.

Without committing to an exact explanation right now (as we're not in
that phase yet and there are a couple of ways of doing this) we'll be
looking at generating a file at import time which will give us the new
nodeID mapped to the old attributes (catID, ArticleID, plus anything else
we think might need) in a structured format.

Then we use some scripting kung-fu to convert that file into a RewriteMap
that mod_rewrite can interrogate.
