Ok. Since you didn't reply to my last email offlist I figured I'd
suck up a bit to make sure everything was kosher.

Yup.

And I mentioned that if you make this one query you lose the ability
to make the author's email different than someone who just commented
on an article.

Plus, adding a where clause would be less prone to fux0ring the
surrounding code, no?
