i'd like to avoid setting that precedent as well.  this is a case where i
saw the potential for problems in the future with a fairly simple solution
available.

yeah, that's the shitty part about it.

better now than later when there are *way* more stylesheets to deal with.

that's not a fair example though because the sidebar and pagetitle1 don't
share the same background color right now.

anyway, seems we're in agreement.  i'll do some research to see what all
needs to be adjusted.
