indeed, goal 1 was the reason we went from <pre> to <textarea>

textarea is not the only solution, though

goal 2 makes sense only if there's a purpose for having the code
highlighted

one such purpose might be to facilitate copy/paste

not all code is meant to be copied

highlighting doesn't really hurt, though
