i fail to see the reasoning in that.  the front page is still hitting the
database, just not quite as often.  when it *is* hitting the database, it's
taking too long right now.  i don't see any reason why the homepage
shouldn't be down around 1000ms or so without caching.  the ram should help
that.

on top of that, there are all the rest of the pages on the site that still
hit the database.  surely the time on those pages could use some improving
as well.
