[thelist] custom 404 not used with .shtml addresses

After a few more experiments, involving typing in all sorts of wrong
URLS, including faulty extensions and addresses in both existent and
noneistent subdirectories, I've given up trying to figure this one
out... my original diagnosis was incomplete - it's not as simple as
.htm works and .shtml doesn't - and I've decided that my Winie5 seems
to have a random mind of its own and since no one else seems to be
getting the problem, (and I can't reproduce it with Netscape) I'll
just have to live with it!
