you don't have to worry about a 'mode' on a unix server...
*however*, you will want to *upload* it as a binary file...
uploading as ASCII will kill it...

also, you can't download directories, you can only download
one file at a time... but you can zip up a series of files
and their relative directories by selecting 'recurse
subdirectories' when you create the archive in Winzip...

no server-side script needed (and i think all servers have
the .zip MIME type configured on install)... and the link is
just an <a> tag linking to a file instead of a web page...
