David,

Thanks for the help. I'll see if I can clarify things a little.

I'm a freelancer, so my client work ends up on a number of different
servers, although I always try to nudge clients towards *nix if
possible.

I'm not sure if I understand the comment about Mac servers not
behaving like any other servers. I thought a web server was a web
server was a web server? I must admit Macs aren't something I've had
a great deal of experience with. I've only had my Powerbook for 6
months (love it to bits though).

The main reason I was inquiring was that a lot of my work uses SSI,
and that's a real pain to test without some sort of local web server.
I have OmniHTTPd on my Windows box, and providing I can get past the
install problems I'm having with Debian at the moment, I'll soon have
Apache up and running for my home network.

The problem comes when I'm stuck on a train/coach/plane visiting
clients. how can I test things like SSI and CGI locally on my
Powerbook? Right now I have to wait until I get home and transfer all
the work over to my PC, or if I'm working on site, upload it all to
my own site and test over the net. Maybe I'm just being too
impatient? *:)

The CGI side isn't really that important I guess. I can get MacPerl
to check the syntax of any Perl stuff... and good point about PHP. I
hadn't thought of that. I would love to be able to test SSI while I'm
working on them though.

Thanks again.

G.
