They do, more like separate bands than spikes (think quantum physics here).
You are not necessarily wrong in your statements. Their spectral radiation
is 'equivalent' to the spectrum of a heated black body at a certain
temperature. It is just a reference. After all black body radiation is one
of the fundamental examples of quantum theory.
