<tip type="figuring out what the heck that document is">
Have a client who sends you documents that windows does recognize?
Go to http://www.webopedia.com/quick_ref/fileextensions.html
It lists many of the most common (and obscure) file extensions and what
program uses them.

<tip type="Don't even bother with Microsoft Works">
If someone sends you a Microsoft Works file (text document, database,
spreadsheet, etc) don't even bother trying to open it with anything
else. Not even other Microsoft programs. The person will have to save the
file out as something else and then send that if you actually need the
data. The only possible exception is if you have a Mac with
MacLinkPlus. That will sometimes convert Works files.
