Memo from Martin P Burns of PricewaterhouseCoopers

-------------------- Start of message text --------------------

Hi Ray

It's because (theoretically) such pages are not static, they can change their
content
and therefore may not be reliably indexed in any storage system which spiders
irregularly. Of course, this is true of probably most web pages...

The worst case is when the query string contains a session variable (many
Broadvision sites, and others too), which when invalid, returns an error.

It's only been fairly recently that sites have been built as an application,
using
query strings to pick content assets.

Cheers
Martin

PS when we going to see a Spectra 2 to keep up with the enormous development
in the CMS market in the last year? It's now 18 months since the announcement of
Spectra 1, and 12 since its release. Please tell me it's not waiting for the CF
move
to Java. I've now punted Spectra to several large clients so far (pre PwC), and
it's
never made it past the 1st round of diligence. Do Tech Strat people have shares
in
BV & Vignette development houses? Enquiring minds want to know

P.S. Of course, this isn't really a Spectra or ColdFusion problem, it's a
spider problem. ASP and PHP sites will have the same issues with spiders.
Does anyone here actually know someone who works for one of these companies?
I'd love to hear a good reason for NOT indexing ?var=val type URLs,
especially in this day and age.
