[thelist] Accessing client hardware using IE

Want to be my new best friend? (please say yes).

I need to access a COM port on a client machine, preferably via a web browser. This is for an intranet, so the hardware/software is standardized; PIII's running NT 4 and IE 5+.

I've considered using COM and Java, but have had complications implementing both.

Connections will be trusted, so security is not a concern, but is there a technology that will allow accessing client hardware through the browser?

Any suggestions, speculations, solutions, comments, or insults will be cheerfully considered.

Thanks (in advance, no less),

Seth
