been there, done that, got the t-shirt

i've worked in corporate systems departments for 30 years, almost the 
whole time as a database guy, and i can tell you from experience that "one 
sleek interface" has never happened, never will, and is pathologically 
improbable if not outright impossible

oh, the hodgepodges exist alright (nice description, too), but integrating 
them is the project from hell, and if you ever get involved in data 
warehousing or data marts, just remember, the hodgepodges will continue to 
exist whether or not your project succeeds, so better ensure that your 
project's success is not contingent upon replacing them

and now that i have revealed one of the holiest of holy database secrets, 
i'm afraid i'm going to have to kill you
