alt-3 gives a hash symbol on a Mac - but how did you get it into your 
email?  Cut n paste?

PS In theory, you could find any key by copying a keyboard resource 
out of your System file and opening it in ResEdit - click on the 
symbol you want and you should get the matching key.

Unfortunately, trying to open the System folder quits the Finder on 
my Mac, running 9.1 (did it on 9.0.4 too...)
