Thanks for all who answered this. It seems to work fine. We do also have
form to subscribe but wanted a shorter cut as well that might attract people
who didn't want to fill it in!! Thanks again.

You can code the subject like this:

<a href="mailto:name at name.co.uk?subject=Ezine subscription">

But not every mail client is going to support that.  Those that don't will 
leave the subject line blank.
