Yes I've actually done that with two different designs, where a
'transparent' button was resting on a background image. It works I'm just
looking for the elegant solution (what ever that may be). I know that PNG is
not fully supported yet, but can't a kid dream?

have you considered the use of a checkerboard .gif?  the red 
squares are transparent, the black squares are your color...

it can be memory intensive for some people to render, but it can at 
least work for all with .gif support...
