PNG has been around for a long time. It's a royalty free replacement for the
gif standard, with lossless compression and has a much smaller file size
than a gif. It supports full transparency and lots of other cool things. The
main reason it has not taken off has been browser support in the past. Now
that NS6 supports supports the PNG standard fully, hopefully the guys over
at Microsloth will catch up.
