Memo from Martin P Burns of PricewaterhouseCoopers

I'd also like to add that asking for too much information up
front, and making too much info mandatory, brings substantial
user resistance (both from consumers and business users).

<tip type="not scaring off users">
If you're putting together registration forms, you must *only*
ask for that which obviously has benefit for the user - the core
of which is info which is required to carry out the task at
hand. If you need more info than this for your (eg) profiling
purposes, you'll have to ask for it a piece at a time, justifying
each piece to the user in terms of benefits.

Thinking of personal info as money (ie has value to the
user which they lose some of if they choose to transfer it to you
for your use) will get you a long way in understanding this. Each
time you ask for info, you have to provide something in return;
typically improved service of one sort or another.
<tip>

Cheers
Martin

My own additional tuppenyworth would suggest that
the forms are bad enough - but if you start putting
near-Fascist JS traps all over it [You VILL FILL OUT
ZIS FORM CORRECTLY] then I'm outta there faster than
you can say 'Barrier to entry'.
