I'll take a look into that. The program uses a third party (same guy who 
wrote qmail) program (/bin/checkpassword) to check passwords. So I don't 
think that PAM is in the loop. I could be wrong.

server_args     = qmail-popup foo.com /bin/checkpassword 
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d Maildir
