Server Side Includes do require that the web server parse the entire
document to find the includes as opposed to serving up the HTML straight to
the web browser.  This can affect response time.  However, this is not that
much different than what happens when CF, ASP or PHP are used.  Is it a big
deal?  Hard to say.  Would depend on the server platform and the web server
software.  Like a lot of things you have to weigh whether the trade-off is
worth it.
