At the point that you decide the people using those browsers aren't
necessary for your site to function (that function could range from "make
money" to "make a point" to "make me happy"). ALA/Zeldman made that choice.
He knows who his audience is (developers) and that they are likely to have a
newer browser. FWIW, I'm planning on using my members.evolt.org space to run
just this kind of experiment. (well, and to play with new scripting
languages)

Or at the point that a new browser can be pushed down the network onto a
user's machine so you can count on that person having the capability.

Yeah, but those hours were really not all that high, in elapsed time. I
don't know if anybody tracked hours, but I would hazard a guess that the
group of people that built the new evolt site could do the same thing for a
commercial client with a very reasonable ROI.

Amen to that. And there are people out there who will fight tooth and nail
against using a Microsoft product.
