another issue i have come across
is users that want to print the pages.

we've found that 680 pixels wide  is a good width for printing.

i usually design to that, because even if they don't request it, 
they ask for it later...

I browse at 1024x768, but my browser *windows* tend to be around 
640x480, since I tend to have half a dozen open at once.  You're not 
going to know that from any stats.

Of course, now and then I have to resize to fit someone's 800x600 
'ice' layout...
