certainties:
Windows 3.1/3.11 and NT 3.5/3.51 can't be directly upgraded to 2000 or XP
Windows 95/98/NT4 can all be upgraded to 2000

possibilities/rumours:
Windows 95/98/NT4/2K can all be upgraded directly to XP Professional
windows 95/98/ME can all be upgraded directly to XP Consumer
Windows ME may not be upgradable to XP Professional

that's what i hear ...
