the width=98% in the middle cell is supposed to force that part of the
table open as far as possible, to force the rounded images in the left and
right cells to butt right up against the edge of their cells without
leaving any gaps, so i guess width=1% in the left and right cells just
nudges the browser a little in case it needs arithmetic help (some
browsers do get confused when calculating cell widths)

obviously, at some point on really really large screen resolutions, a
25-pixel image would be narrower than 1% -- but nobody has complained yet
