Hm ?
WinME here, I am working almost everyday with Photoshop 5.5, mostly
scanned (read: big) images. It happens to be simultaneously with other
memory-intensive apps (AutoCAD (lite), NetObjects Fusion, etc.).
Sometimes burning CD-ROM (SCSI) in the meantime. No problems so far.

No, solid-rock here. Perhaps it depends on the hardware used.
Win98 was stable also. I have not observed any significant stability
differences.
Yes, I had (previously) some troubles with Win98 and the VIA drivers,
but with the latest versions the problems are gone. Not OS's fault,
however.

I choose it deliberately (for my home computer). Changed my OS from
OS/2 (what a pity) -> Win98 (didn't like it) -> now WinME. Except for
the missing command line boot, I like it, mostly its user interface.
I like Win2k only at (job) work, not for my home work.
Best wishes,
Cristi
