One more note on MySQl and Perl or PHP, though:

[I've just finished reading Chapter 1 in the Dubois "MySQL" book... I need
more time to read!]

 ... it turns out that Chapter 7 of this book covers "The Perl DBI API",
while Chapter 8 covers "The PHP API".  A brief scan shows that the book
contains what look to be detailed examples in either technology.
