[thelist] CSS and special characters

I'm trying to display a page with an umlaut or dieresis over a small 
e.  Now I know "alt137" will create it and so will "ë" but each time I 
apply the style sheet to the page, the character is changed to a small "l" 
with a "chevron" over it.  Is there something I'm missing?
