This sounds like you have something misspelled in your .htaccess. I
wanted to my client's server to use files called index.html and
index.shtml as default file and uploaded my .htaccess. After that I
tried to connect to that site and got also a 500 Internal. I asked the
boss of my client's ISP what was going. He told me that a  command was
misspelled.
