Same as it always was - the minimum required to achieve
the business goals and user tasks.

It'll vary from site to site, so for example, a photography
site can better justify 100k+ images than the evolt site.
If there's a good enough justification for large pages, then
the user is prepared to wait.

Have you seen some of the 5k competition entries? Complete
chess games in under 5k. Bowls me over.

Actually, the limiting factor is increasingly becoming server/
network infrastructure load, rather than user platform because
of the last couple of years' growth rate of user numbers.

Although the bandwidth demand will continue to rise as people
*use* their connections more (and of course, broadband makes
this worse, not better), the numbers in most large markets
is starting to reach saturation point - most people who *will*
have internet access have already got it. This means that the
growth rate is slowing.

[If you're in the business of selling starter systems to consumers,
this is probably a good time to get out... If you're selling mobile
phone handsets in Europe, you should have been out on December
26th, unlike Motorola and Ericsson. Guys, Nokia have won. Deal
with it.]

As the surviving dotcoms start to crawl towards profit, and
the bricks and mortar enterprises move from pilot eBusinesses
to rollout, they'll slowly improve their infrastructure. The
situation *should* be getting better.

Cheers
Martin
