hi jay

thanks, yes, very interesting

"hackers" is quite appropriate -- when it got the that DBI stuff, i was
wondering whether the article was indeed about an sql technique or about
showing off perl skills

nicely written article, though

<warning type="rant" />

but i didn't care at all for the site -- very slow to load, frustrating
horizontal scroll at 800x600, and then this on every friggin page --

    Do you want to allow ActiveX controls and plug-ins to run?
      Yes | No

    A script is accessing an ActiveX control on this page which
    has been marked safe for scripting. Do you want to allow this?
      Yes | No

    An ActiveX control on this page is not safe. Your current
    security settings prohibit running unsafe controls on this page.
    As a result, this page may not display as intended
      OK

why do people insist on doing this kind of stuff on a public web site?

oh, i forgot, it's a "developer" site, not a public site

i guess  developer  ==  micros~1 minion

okay, i'm busted -- yes, i was using ie to browse the site

hmm, i wonder if i can get mozilla to disregard ActiveX without those
annoying warnings...

<tip>
altavista has combined their "raging" search with their text-only search --
very fast, decent results
http://www.altavista.com/sites/search/text?raging=1
(i still think google has a better database, though)
</tip>
