Memo from Martin P Burns of PricewaterhouseCoopers

Sharon

Spiders are web clients no different from browsers. Server
Side Includes will be brought into the page before it gets served
out to the web client.

So if you have common items like meta data being included
into the pages, they will be indexed *as part of the page* -
the spider has no more knowledge of how they got there than
the average user.

Here's an example - go to my site:
http://www.easyweb.co.uk/
and work out from the HTML where and what the includes are.

The only way you can tell is by comparing page against page and
spotting the common elements, because the end result is static
HTML, no different from a single HTML file.

Web clients don't know what's behind the scenes, just what the server
gives them.

Cheers
Martin

Martin -

I was primarily concerned with using Includes for the keyword meta tags and
whether the search engines would indeed spider those includes.

Notice that Matt doesn't use Includes for keywords and phrases although he
does for other meta tags (like Author, etc.). But he does that because they
may change from page to page, if I understand him correctly. However, still
leaves me wondering if I'm better off not doing Includes for
keywords/phrases until we definitely know that they're definitely being
indexed as key words.

Interesting to note that menu item Includes are indexed.
