I don't know if this is on topic or not but if anyone has a solution or
tips they would be most helpful. So here goes nothing, a friend of mine
tried this:
I recompiled my kernel(2.4.2-2) for iptables support and some other
masquerading stuff, and now when I boot it come to "Welcome to Red Hat Linux
Press 'I' to enter interactive startup." then it freezes at "Mounting proc
filesystem".
I can boot off a floppy disk that has the original kernel on it.
I seem to have preformed all operations for compiling the kernel(make dep,
make clean, make bzImage, make modules, make modules_install, make install,
make bzlilo) then I check lilo.conf to make sure everything looks alright
then reboot to the new kernel and that's where I started this message from.

This is why I have never tried to recompile my kernel, I think.
