yup, worked a treat.  that was close to what i tried that didn't work

REReplaceNoCase(mask, '[,| ][y*]', '','ALL')

that's obviously not quite what i needed.

yes, because i'm using the mask unaltered except for the month portion which
i'm stripping (which sits before the day).
