+1  :-)

Too many projects *can't* be precisely defined upfront because the 
client 

 1) has only a vague idea what they want 

 2) has even less of a clue what they *need*

 3) has zero experience creating software specs

 4) and can't visualize abstractions -- so will need to be *shown* 
    rather than told what you have in mind

- and so to rudy's approach I'd add " and your own rapid-prototyping
environment of choice" so you can have something to show the client
to elicit useful feedback all along the way ...
