i found the same problem when developing a dhtml dropdown menu navigation 
for a site recently (http://www.mtbachelor.com/).  i found that it was a 
problem with placing tables within a positioned element.  it was as if the 
position attribute was being inherited from the the container despite it 
being implicitly set as relative or static for all elements within the 
positioned element.  i finally got it to display mostly properly, but not 
good enough for public use.  consequently they've been turned off for mac 
ie users.
