[thelist] Hosting advice for large photo gallery/professional photo organisation site

Thanks for the responses on and off list. AUD325 per month is
approximately USD150-160. Hosting in the US appears to be radically
cheaper than in Australia, competition I suppose, with better
facilities. www.readyhosting.com seems amazingly cheap to me.

The ping difference this am was average 20ms here, 270ms to the US
(although it can be around 400)on 4-5 jumps. Has anyone any
opinion/experience on whether this would constitute a serious drawback
to our hosting in the US when most users would be in Australia? 

Most of the recommendations received were for NT hosts, while I am
currently more disposed towards Unix servers. Am I just being too
conservative, or is there now no major difference between hosting on
these platforms? I had trouble with permissions when I was on an NT host
before, but never on Unix.
