[thelist] MIME

I just use e-mail, I don't really understand it so when I received a
message today that had this at the top:
<quote>
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. If you are reading
this text, you may want to consider changing to a mail reader
or gateway that understands how to properly handle MIME multipart
messages.
</quote>

I thought I would turn to you experts -- does MIME format include HTML
mail? Sorry for the really dumb question here, but this text message was
followed by an html formatted mail and I really, really hate all that
shtuff in there.

This web site http://www.oac.uci.edu/indiv/ehood/MIME/MIME.html seems to
have good information but it's not easy to comprehend.

If my suspicions are correct (bad MIME, bad, bad MIME), then it's
particularly interesting that this message was an advertisement for an
anti-virus software program (now just $29.95!) and I thought HTML mail was
particularly vulnerable to virii??

Also, if MIME is bad as I've been led to believe, I use Eudora and MIME is
the default option. So, in plain English -- huh?? What's MIME and should I
use it?

TIA
Tamara
