"Re-designing" a site can sometimes be more frustrating that designing an
original site!  People are resistant to change, unless they really had some
major complaints about their existing site.

I looked at both sites, and I DO like the softness of yours (although the
pink and blue makes it look like a "baby" site).  I have plenty of clients
that say "do something to make "X" stand out" or "I want "X" to jump off the
page".  And after several tasteful submissions of ideas, I understand that
they really mean "make it harsh", like your perception of their original
design.

Can't please all the people all the time - as they say....
