[thelist] Drawing XML Content into URLs in an XSL Doc

Sorry - XML newbie question from a non-programmer - I couldn't quite
figure out how to phrase my question correctly to the great Google god,
so I'm turning to you guys:

I'm formatting some XSL docs and I need to use content coming from
tagged content in the XML document in an URL within the XSL document.
What's wrong with using: 
<a href="<xsl:value-of select="url"></xsl:value-of>"> ? 

I'm receiving a "file not well-formed, & expected" message...
