I agree with everyone's recommendations so far. Excellent books.

For a good introduction to JavaScript with a tutorial-like approach I 
recommend a great book by Dori Smith and Tom Negrino. It covers all the 
basics to get you started with using JavaScript on the Web.... mouseovers, 
forms, popup windows, frames, more.

JavaScript for the World Wide Web, 4th edition
Visual QuickStart Guide
by Tom Negrino, Dori Smith
Peachpit Press; ISBN: 0201735172 (April, 2001)

I started with that one and the others that have been recommended along 
with it. I found that I needed at least 2 books to cover what I've 
needed... from the basics to the more detailed and for reference.
