i hate it when that happens... i used to have a Flash widget on my personal
site that was over 50k, never could use it, IMO, because i knew everyone who
visited my site was on a dial-up...

i guess it depends on your users... 23.6kb is just .4kb shy of my targetted
page maximum size...  so for me, it would be too large...

as someone said, chopping it might help, it won't make it come down faster in
all cases (like if the chopped images in sum are barely smaller in some than
the original image), but it can be perceived that way, and it could allow you to
apply different compression settings to different parts of the image...

flat colors can be reproduced using background colors of tables cells if you try
that approach...  simple color combinations (no gradients, etc.) can be
switched to .gif...

if you had a sample image to post, that might help...
