hi people

i am sure this is miserably off-topic but i hope some
of the people who lurk on this mailing list will find
this useful too (i for one would love some advice from
the experts here).

tomorrow i have my first day at the job with a suit
and tie and the works. i will be going to a conference
- my first ever. until now i have been mostly a techie
but have now reached a stage where i can do all this
business stuff.

my boss says i need to "network" in the conference.
the only networking i know until now contains the
words "3COM" and "LAN" somewhere in the description.
but not this one.

so i have a question for you guys. what does one do to
network? i mean, at a conference, how do you really
start out with total strangers who are 10-15 years
older than you and are there looking for "business
opportunities"? do you just like hand over a business
card and say "hi i am erick and i have been getting
drunk for the past 32 years, and oh by the way i am
REALLY interested in you and your company"?

i mean, my boss wants me to come back with some good
references as well, so that we can later pitch for
projects and stuff, you know. but i feel - what do
they call it - diffident. (yeah, needed one big word
in my message, uh-huh).

sorry for the long rant. would absolutely fall flat
for any advice/recommendations/comments etc.
