That would certainly cause problems: people who assume there must be a WWW and add it themselves also cause problems.

My home ISP keeps all homepages under:
http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/

http://www.nildram.co.uk/ takes you to their main website, various other ***.nildram.co.uk addresses take you to other useful things (FTP and so on).

And http://www.homepages.nildram.co.uk/, with the fifth level put in, doesn't take you anywhere.

All of which seems entirely reasonable to me, though the lack of plain nildram.co.uk is a little surprising.
