Chris:

PDF file size has far more to do with how your client creates PDFs and the
types of information that is in the files than anything PageMaker is doing.

Here are few quick thoughts:

Have your client print to a ps file and then distill the file -- it always
results in a much smaller PDF file.  Also, check her distiller settings - is
she including thumbnails, bookmarks, using the proper "screen" settings,
etc? Acrobat 5.0 creates bigger files than Acrobat 4.0 (around 20% larger).
What file formats are the graphics? Is compress line art checked? Color
settings?
